How does this resource add value to this unit?
It provides differentiation and modification to the original peer evaluation tool that can be used in lower grade levels and by students that have yet to be exposed to this level of vocabulary or complexity.
How is this resource used in a next generation classroom?
I personally know that socratic seminars are difficult to get a grasp on, for teachers and students, when they are quite young or when they are just being introduced to it. I think that the peer evaluation tool is a great way for students to grade each other but it was very difficult for lower level students and ELL's to use because of the language and complexity of the resource. I feel that by using the modified version of the tool they have a better understanding of what the point of it a socratic is and they aren't spending their time reading and rereading information that they don't understand. This version already breaks it down and has them do the checks at the same time in order to keep the class flowing and students following along with the discussion. With time, the goal is for low level students and classes to be able to transition to the original tool by the end of the year.

How much time does this resource take to use?
No more than about 5 minutes of prep and 5 minute explanation to the class on how to use it. It is modified so that they are half sheets, to save paper, and also to print front and back, so that there is only one half sheet shared between partners. So, the papers just need to be printed and cut in half by the teacher, then passed out and explained.

How does this resource add value to this unit?
This tool focuses students on the key points of an effective scientific discourse, allowing students to both give and receive formative feedback from their peers.
How is this resource used in a next generation classroom?
This tool is best used in an inner-circle/outer-circle model of Socratic dialogue. One inner-circle student and one outer-circle student are partnered and switch mid-way through the discussion. Each student has one of these forms and the student in the outer circle completes this form for their partner.

How does this resource add value to this unit?
Sentence starters provide students with a framework for articulating their ideas and working with the ideas of others.
How is this resource used in a next generation classroom?
In K-2 classrooms, the teacher can use the Sentence Starters to model how to communicate verbally in a science classroom. In Grades 3-8, students use the Sentence Starters as a quick-start tool for communicating in a science classroom. The Sentence Starters provided are not an exhaustive list. Over time, the goal is for these Sentence Starters to become habits of engaging in scientific discourse.
